Opened in 1964, West Gymnasium is home to a basketball and volleyball court, as well as Thorpe Pool. West Gym was designed by the then up and coming architect, Minoru Yamasaki. Yamasaki designed four other buildings on campus, an addition to Myers, and later designed the World Trade Center.

West Gym was originally the Men's Gymnasium, while Cowling was the Women's Gymnasium. On opening day, the Minneapolis Symphony performed in the gymnasium while Carleton's synchronized swimming troupe performed in Thorpe Pool.
